OEM / ODM PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Prototyping and Tooling from Sample to Production

WJW supports prototype development, sample validation and tooling preparation for custom USB cables, USB chargers and power adapters—helping product teams verify key structural, functional and manufacturing decisions before repeat production.

Start with what you already have—a reference sample, existing product, drawing, STEP file, photo, sketch or defined technical requirement. A complete production package is not required at the beginning.
WHY PROTOTYPE FIRST

Reduce uncertainty before you scale production.

Prototype development creates a controlled review point before critical design and manufacturing decisions are committed to tooling. It helps clarify what is ready, what needs revision and what still requires validation.

PROTOTYPE REVIEW

A prototype should answer real product questions

The review scope depends on the product and application. For WJW projects, prototype evaluation focuses on the physical, electrical, material and manufacturing details that can influence later production.

A / 01

Form & Fit

Review connector mating, product dimensions, connector orientation, cable exit, enclosure geometry, strain-relief structure and application-specific physical interfaces.

B / 02

Function

Check the applicable charging, power, continuity, data or output requirements defined for the USB cable, USB charger or power-adapter project.

C / 03

Material & Appearance

Review relevant cable jacket, housing material, overmold, strain-relief characteristics, flexibility, color, surface condition, logo and exterior finish.

D / 04

Manufacturability

Evaluate whether the proposed structure can be molded, assembled, inspected, electrically tested and controlled consistently during repeat manufacturing.

PROTOTYPE REVIEW OUTPUT

What should be clearer after prototype review?

Prototype development should move the project forward. The result should be clearer technical decisions, not simply another physical sample.

OUTPUT 01 Product Direction

Confirm which structure should move forward into the next development stage.

OUTPUT 02 Required Revisions

Identify dimensions, structures, materials or appearance details that still need adjustment.

OUTPUT 03 Material & Component Direction

Clarify the relevant cable, housing, connector or component configuration.

OUTPUT 04 Tooling Requirement

Determine whether existing tooling, an adapted structure or new tooling is appropriate.

OUTPUT 05 Updated Specification

Reflect approved technical changes in relevant project drawings or specifications.

OUTPUT 06 Next-Stage Approval Basis

Establish a clearer reference for tooling, tool trial and production preparation.

PROTOTYPE ITERATION

Refine the product before committing to tooling

If the first prototype identifies an issue or a better product direction, relevant changes can still be made before the structure is committed to production tooling.

REV A

Initial Prototype

Build the first physical version around the current product definition, selected components and engineering direction.

REVIEW
REV B

Engineering Revision

Adjust relevant geometry, connector details, cable construction, materials, enclosure structure or appearance based on prototype review.

VERIFY
FINAL

Approved Direction

Establish the product structure and specification used as the basis for tooling, tool trial and production preparation.

APPROVED

The number of prototype iterations depends on product complexity, customization scope and the changes identified during review.

TOOLING STRATEGY

Custom does not automatically mean new tooling

Tooling should follow the approved product geometry and actual manufacturing requirement—not simply whether the project is described as custom.

USE
EXISTING TOOLING

Keep proven geometry

Where an available structure already meets the relevant mechanical requirements, customization can focus on cable specification, materials, color, branding, connector configuration or other project-specific requirements.

ADAPT
EXISTING STRUCTURE

Modify only what is necessary

When the required product is close to an established manufacturable design, selected areas can be reviewed for modification while suitable existing manufacturing resources are retained.

CREATE
NEW TOOLING

Tool genuinely new geometry

New tooling may be required where a project introduces a connector housing, cable overmold, strain relief, charger enclosure, adapter housing or another structure that cannot be achieved using existing tooling.

TOOLING SCOPE

Tool what the approved product actually requires

Depending on the product, tooling may involve molded structures, overmolding tools or project-specific production fixtures.

01

Connector Housing

Custom molded connector geometry where an existing structure cannot meet the project requirement.

02

Cable Overmold

Molded connector body, cable exit geometry and related exterior structure.

03

Strain Relief

Product-specific cable transition geometry where the approved structure differs from an existing design.

04

Charger / Adapter Housing

Dedicated molded enclosure parts where the approved industrial design requires a new housing structure.

05

Production Fixtures

Positioning, holding, assembly or inspection-related fixtures where required to support repeatable production.

WJW PRODUCT APPLICATION

Different products require different development decisions

Prototype and tooling plans are defined around the actual construction and customization requirements of the product rather than one fixed development package.

USB Cable Assemblies

Projects may involve connector configuration, cable length, conductor and shielding requirements, cable construction, jacket material, overmold geometry, strain relief, color, logo and applicable electrical performance requirements.

USB Chargers

Development may involve charger housing, plug structure, USB port arrangement, target output, applicable charging platform, surface finish, labeling and branding requirements.

Power Adapters

Projects may involve enclosure structure, required output, DC connector, cable lead, label information, appearance requirements and the intended device or application.

TOOL TRIAL & VALIDATION

Tooling development continues through trial and validation

Completing a mold or fixture is not the final review point. Production-intent output still needs to be checked before the project moves into repeat manufacturing.

T0 / FIRST OUTPUT

Initial Tool Trial

Review applicable dimensions, molded condition, product fit, assembly interfaces and exterior details of the first production-intent output.

Molding condition
Fit & assembly
T1 / CORRECTION

Adjust Where Necessary

If the first trial identifies a problem, the next step may involve tooling correction, structural adjustment or manufacturing-process refinement.

T2 / CONFIRM

Validate Revised Output

Review the revised production-intent sample against applicable approved requirements before production release.

TOOLING PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS

Define the tooling terms before development begins

Tooling is both an engineering and commercial decision. The relevant scope and project terms should therefore be confirmed before tooling development starts.

01 Tooling Scope Clarify which molds, overmolding tools or fixtures are included in the project.
02 Tooling Cost Confirm project-specific tooling cost after the approved structure and tooling requirement are clear.
03 Development Schedule Timing depends on tooling complexity, product structure and required trial or adjustment stages.
04 Ownership Arrangement Applicable ownership terms should be stated clearly in the project quotation or agreement.
05 Engineering Changes Confirm how tooling modifications are handled if the approved product requirement later changes.
06 Storage & Maintenance Where applicable, storage, maintenance and long-term tooling arrangements are confirmed according to the individual project.
PRODUCTION RELEASE

When the important decisions stop moving, production can start moving.

Release criteria vary according to the product, project specification and target application. The objective is to ensure that the requirements relevant to repeat manufacturing are sufficiently clear.

01 Product Structure

Relevant physical geometry has been reviewed.

02 Critical Dimensions

Applicable dimensional requirements are defined.

03 Functional Requirements

Key electrical or product-performance targets are established.

04 Materials

Relevant material and component direction is confirmed.

05 Appearance

Finish, color, labeling and applicable branding are reviewed.

06 Manufacturing Direction

The product is prepared for the intended production process.
