USB Chargers

CHARGER FAMILIES

Choose the Charger Form Factor First

USB chargers can be grouped by how they are installed and how they are used. Power level, port count and fast-charging technology are separate specifications that can vary within each family.

Travel Multi-Plug Portable
OUTPUT POWER

Choose Charger Power by Device Requirement

Charger wattage should be matched to the device category and charging protocol. Higher charger wattage does not mean every connected device will draw the full rated power.

5–20W

Low-Power Charging

Suitable for many accessories, wearables, basic USB devices and lower-power charging applications.

Typical focus: 5V USB / compact devices
20–65W

Phones, Tablets & Portable Devices

A common range for fast-charging smartphones, tablets and selected USB-C portable computers.

Typical focus: USB-C PD / PPS
65–100W

Laptop Charging

Suitable for compatible USB-C laptops, tablets and higher-power single-device applications.

Typical focus: PD + 5A cable where required
100W+

High-Power & Multi-Device

Higher total power can support demanding USB-C devices or several connected devices from one charger.

Typical focus: PD 3.1 / multi-port power budget
Important: For USB Power Delivery charging, the charger, cable and connected device work together to determine the actual negotiated power. A higher-rated charger does not force its maximum wattage into a lower-power device.
PORTS & CHARGING PROTOCOLS

Port Type and Charging Protocol Are Different Specifications

USB-A or USB-C describes the physical output port. Charging speed also depends on the protocol, output profile, cable and connected device.

USB-A

Standard USB Output

Used for conventional USB charging and selected fast-charging protocols, depending on the charger model.

USB-C

Modern Charging Port

Commonly used for USB Power Delivery and higher-power charging applications.

A + C

Mixed-Port Charger

Combines USB-A and USB-C for users who need to charge different generations of devices.

Multi-Port

Several Devices

Multiple outputs can charge several devices simultaneously, subject to the charger's total power budget.

Charging Protocols

Protocol compatibility determines which voltage and current profiles can be negotiated with the connected device.

USB PD USB Power Delivery for compatible USB-C phones, tablets, laptops and other devices.
PPS Programmable Power Supply for compatible devices requiring more granular voltage adjustment.
QC Qualcomm Quick Charge support on applicable charger models and compatible devices.
Other Additional device-specific fast-charging protocols may be available by model.
GAN CHARGING

GaN for Compact High-Power Charger Designs

Gallium nitride charger platforms are used in selected higher-power models to support compact charger designs and efficient power conversion.

GaN is a charger technology, not a charging protocol. A GaN charger may also support USB PD, PPS, QC or multiple ports, depending on the individual design.

Selection point: do not choose a charger only because it is GaN. Always confirm output power, port configuration, charging protocol and device compatibility.
Compact

Smaller Housing

GaN platforms can enable more compact charger designs at selected power levels.

High Power

USB-C Applications

Suitable for charger designs serving phones, tablets, laptops and multi-device use.

PD / PPS

Protocol Options

Selected GaN chargers can combine USB-C PD with additional fast-charge protocols.

Multi-Port

Power Distribution

Higher-power GaN chargers can support several output ports with model-specific power allocation.

AC PLUG OPTIONS

Match the Charger to the Destination Market

The AC plug configuration should be selected according to the destination market and the required charger form factor.

US

US Plug

Type A / compatible North American wall-charger designs.

EU

EU Plug

European-style plug configuration for applicable markets.

UK

UK Plug

Type G configuration for the United Kingdom and compatible markets.

AU

AU Plug

Type I configuration for Australia and compatible markets.

INT

Travel / Universal

Multi-plug or interchangeable travel-oriented charging configuration.

KEY SPECIFICATIONS

USB Charger Parameters

Do not select a charger only by wattage. Port type, output profile, protocol support and simultaneous charging behavior all affect real-world compatibility.

AC Input 100–240V AC Options

Universal-input designs are available on applicable charger models. Confirm the exact model specification.

Output Port USB-A / USB-C

Single-port and mixed-port charger configurations are available.

Output Power Model Dependent

Select according to device requirement, port configuration and protocol.

Fast Charging PD / PPS / QC Options

Protocol support varies by charger model and target device.

Port Count Single / Multi-Port

Port count affects simultaneous charging and power allocation.

Technology Silicon / GaN Options

Technology choice influences charger structure, size and thermal design.

AC Plug US / EU / UK / AU

Choose according to destination market and installation requirements.

Protection Multiple Protection Functions

Selected designs include over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature and short-circuit protection.

CHARGER COMPARISON

Compare USB Charger Solutions

Compare charger families by how they are used, how power is delivered and how many devices they need to support.

CHARGER POWER PORTS & PROTOCOL DESIGN APPLICATION
Charger Type Typical Power Focus Power Behavior Port Configuration Charging Function Form Factor Key Selection Point Typical Use
Standard Wall Charger Low to medium power Dedicated output USB-A or USB-C Standard / model-specific fast charge Direct wall plug Size + plug standard Phones / Accessories / Bundled Devices
USB-C PD Fast Charger Medium to high power Negotiated power USB-C PD / PPS options Compact wall charger Power profile + cable Smartphones / Tablets / Laptops
Multi-Port Charger Shared total power Dynamic allocation USB-C / USB-A combinations Multi-device charging Wall or desktop Per-port power distribution Office / Home / Multi-Device
Desktop Charger Medium to high total power Shared across ports Multiple outputs PD / USB charging options Desktop station Total power + device count Workstation / Commercial Counter
Travel Charger Model dependent Single / multi-device USB-A / USB-C options Charging / fast-charge options Multi-plug / interchangeable Destination plug compatibility Travel / International Use

Power ranges and protocol support depend on the individual charger model. For multi-port chargers, the total rated output may be divided between active ports, so per-port power can change when several devices are connected.

FAQ

USB Charger Questions

Common questions about charger wattage, USB-C PD, multi-port charging, GaN and device compatibility.

Not in a correctly implemented compatible charging system. With USB Power Delivery, the charger and connected device negotiate a supported power profile. Actual charging power is limited by the capabilities of the charger, cable and device.
USB-A and USB-C describe the output connector type. USB-C is commonly used with USB Power Delivery and higher-power charging, but the connector alone does not define the charger's wattage or protocol support.
USB Power Delivery is a charging system that allows compatible devices and chargers to negotiate supported voltage and current levels over USB-C. The available power depends on the charger, cable and connected device.
A multi-port charger has a total output power budget. When several ports are active, that total power may be distributed between the connected devices. The exact allocation depends on the charger design.
No. GaN describes the power-conversion technology, not the charging speed itself. Charging speed depends on output wattage, protocol support, cable capability and the connected device.
For higher-current USB-C Power Delivery levels, a compatible cable is required. USB-C current above 3A requires an appropriate 5A-rated cable with the required electronic identification. Always match the cable to the intended power level.
Choose the AC plug according to the destination market and local outlet standard. Available configurations may include US, EU, UK, AU and travel-oriented multi-plug designs.
