How to Select USB-C Charger Power

Part 1: Power Levels

20W Charger

A 20W USB-C charger is commonly selected for smartphones and other compact mobile devices. Selected models support USB Power Delivery and may also support device-specific fast-charging protocols. Under USB PD, approximately 20W can be delivered through a profile such as 9V at about 2.2A. A device limited to 5V will draw only the power allowed by its supported current and charging protocol and will not automatically receive 20W simply because the charger is rated for it. Actual charging power depends on the voltage and current profiles supported by both the charger and the connected device.

The practical role of a 20W charger is to provide fast charging for one compact device while keeping the enclosure small, which is useful for home use, travel and for bundles that pair one charger with one device. Selected 20W models can use compact enclosures, but temperature rise still depends on conversion efficiency, enclosure design, ambient temperature and operating conditions. For device classes that use PPS or a vendor specific fast-charging mode, confirm that the selected charger implements the required mode and output range. Where the target includes a phone that supports a higher configuration, consider whether a larger power level would deliver additional value or whether the phone itself limits the charging power.

65W Charger

A 65W USB-C charger is commonly used for tablets and many laptops. Selected tablets may draw around 20W to 45W, while many thin-and-light laptops are rated near 65W under USB Power Delivery. A 65W charger typically provides a range of PD voltage and current pairs, with 20V at 3.25A corresponding to 65W, and additional profiles such as 15V or 9V for lower-power devices. The delivered power is limited by the negotiated profile, so a 65W charger can also power a smartphone at a lower level or support a tablet that requires only a fraction of its maximum. This makes the 65W level a common choice where one charger serves a laptop and a mobile device at different times.

When a laptop is used and charged at the same time, part of the available output runs the system while the remainder charges the battery, so both the steady-state system draw and the supported input profile should be considered. Confirm the exact port to which the laptop connects, since not every USB-C port on a device necessarily offers the same PD capability, and distinguish the charger’s role from that of any hub or docking product in the chain. For a single, primary device, a 65W charger suits devices rated up to 65W; for a device that draws more during peak load, a higher level may be required.

100W Charger

A 100W USB-C charger is commonly matched to higher-power laptops and demanding workloads. Under USB Power Delivery, Standard Power Range supports up to 100W at 20V/5A. A 100W charger provides headroom for laptops that require 65W or more under load while leaving capacity for the battery. The cable’s electronically reported current capability is considered during USB PD operation, while connector construction and cable resistance affect the physical power path. Outputs above 3A require an appropriate 5A electronically marked USB-C to USB-C cable.

When a 100W charger is used through a USB-C hub or dock, confirm the supported PD pass-through input and output of that product. Avoid unspecified USB-C extension cables or adapter chains, because the resulting connection may not support the required power or meet the applicable USB-C conditions. The sustained output of a 100W charger under load also depends on thermal management, so ambient temperature and enclosure airflow should be reviewed for continuous operation. Confirm the target laptop’s maximum required power and its supported PD profiles before selecting a 100W model, and verify that the cable meets the corresponding current rating for the chosen configuration.

140W Charger

A 140W USB-C charger is commonly considered for selected high-performance laptops and other EPR-capable equipment. Output above 100W falls within USB Power Delivery Extended Power Range, where higher fixed-voltage levels are available, including 28V at 5A for 140W. EPR operation requires a compatible EPR charger, an EPR-capable device and a 5A electronically marked EPR USB-C cable, and the achievable power depends on the capability of each element in the chain. A charger at this level also negotiates downward for lower-power devices, so it can serve a single professional device while remaining capable of higher output where the connected device supports it.

Because EPR uses voltages above 20V and can deliver higher total power, the cable and connector ratings, continuous-output thermal behavior and destination-market compliance of the selected model should all be confirmed. EPR is not limited to one device class, so the actual selection should follow the target device’s supported EPR profile rather than a general label. Confirm EPR compatibility across the charger, the device and the cable before selecting a 140W model, and keep in mind that a higher-wattage charger does not force excess power into any device that negotiates a lower configuration.

Part 2: Selection Factors

Device Power Requirement

The starting point is the power required by the target device, expressed in watts and determined by its supported input voltage, current and charging protocol. The charger should provide the required USB PD fixed profiles and, where applicable, PPS or another device-specific charging mode. Because power is negotiated, a charger rated above the device’s requirement can operate at a lower supported level. Conversely, a charger rated below the requirement may reduce charging speed or limit operation under sustained load. Confirm the required protocol, PD profiles, PPS range where applicable and maximum sustained power for each target device.

It is useful to check the device’s power demand under the intended workload rather than relying only on a nominal charger rating. Peak charging power and steady-state operating power can differ, and selecting adequate rated output can provide operating margin but does not by itself establish product safety. For devices charged one at a time, use the highest individual requirement as the power-tier reference. For simultaneous charging, calculate the combined requirement and verify the charger’s per-port allocation and total rated output.

Charging Scenario

The charging scenario affects whether a single power level is adequate. A quick top-up for a smartphone differs from charging a laptop while it runs intensive applications. Longer charging periods also differ from brief charging sessions because device demand can change with battery state, temperature and operating workload. A device used under load while charging may require power continuously, so the charger should maintain the specified output under the intended operating conditions. Ambient temperature, ventilation and any output derating should also be reviewed. For continuous-use applications, confirm the allowable operating temperature and relevant thermal validation for the selected model.

The placement of the charger, its form factor and the cable length also influence the operating scenario. A wall adapter that is fully enclosed may dissipate heat differently from a desktop model with more exposed surface, and a longer cable increases series resistance and voltage drop. Where a device is charged in a confined space, at elevated ambient temperature or through a long or low-rated cable, the achievable power may be below the charger’s rated maximum. These factors should be recorded in the project specification alongside the nominal wattage.

Number of Devices

The number of devices connected simultaneously determines whether a single-output charger is sufficient or a multi-port configuration is required. For a single device, a one-to-one output level is direct. For multiple devices, the total output is shared or allocated by the charger’s port configuration and power-management logic, so the per-port rating and the total rated output should both be checked. The combined load of all devices to be charged at the same time serves as a reference for the required total output. For OEM and product-bundle requirements, the device mix, port arrangement and charging priority should be confirmed before sampling and production.

When devices are charged at different times, a lower total output may be acceptable, whereas simultaneous charging of several laptops raises the required total. Confirm how the charger behaves when a device is connected or disconnected, since some models redistribute power or renegotiate a profile. The final configuration should state the number of ports, the output available on each, the supported simultaneous combinations and the total rated output, so that a buyer can verify compatibility with the intended device set.

Selecting USB-C charger power begins with the sustained power requirement of each target device, followed by the charging scenario and the number of devices sharing the source. The supported charging protocol, PD profiles, required cable rating, port-level power allocation and thermal performance should be confirmed for the selected model.
